You tube cooking channels and women empowerment.

Dr Ragini Sahai

Open the social media and here you find a lot of videos on preparation of various Indian as well as global culinary.

A very common trending feature among large number of women across age groups is to experiment with different cooking dishes, learning and spreading it to many viewers through their own channel.

This has given them lot of learning and autonomy. Creating own channels of cooking has given a huge sense of identity and empowerment to those women who had not been the part of organized workforce. The abundance of knowledge on culinary art has actually enhanced the cooking skills in many kitchens across globe. It's interesting to see about those women who have spent their lives in kitchen and have been able to exhibit their skills on cooking channels and able to earn money as well.

Go back twenty years when a young girl was supposed to be learning many types of cooking styles in order to enhance her own identity and status in families. Mother and grandmother had an important role in teaching as well as verifying these skills of girls. In fact, a large population from India were actually looking for the culinary skills of girls as one of the important benchmarks for getting a suitable match for her. Appreciation and status of girl was closely associated with this. A young married girl was actually supposed to exhibit her skills of cooking in order to gain appreciation in her marital family. This may still be practiced in many parts of India even today.

In today scenario anyone who has to learn something new in cooking can access plenty of videos on YouTube. The availability of content and its ease of use has even motivated many menfolk to try their hands on cooking. This is actually making people believe that Cooking is no more meant to done by women of the family. Some of the video channel which I follow is Hebbars kitchen, Nisha Madhulika, Rolis kitchen, Sanjiv Kapoor etc

Thankyou You tube for empowering and giving identity, space to people who have knowledge and interest on cooking.
